How long does it take to finish the whole circle of a interview in big IT company ,such as Microsoft,IBM?

I am talking about the marketing position. I once heard somebody(who applied the marketing position) had spanned four months for the up to seven times interview at microsoft,including one that required him to live at microsoft's hotel for 4 days.is that true ,and does it applies equally to every vacancy's recruiting?
